Topps chewing gum - Weird Wheels stickers























In 1980, Topps issued the Weird Wheels 55 cards (peel-off stickers). 22 images were painted by Norman Saunders (also see my Saunders Mars Attacks blog posted somewhere below). The remainder were painted by another unknown artist.

It is not accurate to say Norm painted 22 Weird Wheels...what he did was touch-up on many. I wrote most and painted all 55 but Len Brown wanted some of the painting technique to be more Toppsish. I was new to full-color painting and Norm punched up contrast and especially re-did flames. As per my brief from Spiegelman, I did my flames more like Big Daddy Roth. Go figure.
